Our intention is to give information to those considering moving to Spain or those already here, particularly those finding their way around. Our specialist area of knowledge is the Costa Blanca (in particular the Torrevieja/Orihuela Costa area) and the Costa Del Sol. However, much of the information will be applicable to all of Spain. To help those currently looking to purchase a property, we have recently launched a sister site SearchSpainOnline and here you will find an extensive selection of property in all price ranges throught Spain

So, what is living in Spain really like for an expat?

That’s an interesting question but one thing it is NOT is a longer version of your annual two week holiday on a Benidorm or Marbella beach. It is exciting, frustrating, fun, too hot, too cold, too lonely, too busy, too quiet, too noisy. In short it can be all things to all people and at this stage we have no idea whether you will enjoy or even survive the challenge of living in a foreign climate instead of just spending a week or two while spending your holidays in Spain.

What we do know is that your chances of success are increased massively if you have done your homework in advance. What do we mean by that?

thisisspain
Well, nowadays, there are many sites on the Internet where you can gain all kinds of information about emigration in general and about emigrating to Spain in particular. There are also several excellent books and you will find many references to two definitive guides.

There is David Searl’s ” You and the Law in Spain” and Blevins Franks “Financial Guide to Living in Spain.” You will find details of the books elsewhere on this site but leaving for Spain without studying them in depth is a very dangerous start to your life abroad. Ensure though that you have the latest editions – information on inheritance tax in 2006 or the smoking laws in 2008 is worse than useless!

As you visit the different sections of this site you will find information about many aspects of Life in Spain. Spain has moved forward to a tremendous pace over the past thirty years and from the sleepy, agrarian state of just a few years ago a dynamic, post-industrialised society has developed. These changes have been seen most clearly on the Costas where you will now find a cosmopolitan lifestyle with prices not markedly different to Northern Europe for many products and services. This region is one that has seen a steady rise in tourism, followed by a rise in hotels, resorts and timeshares, which may actually provide a budget friendly means for accommodations for those wishing to explore the region. Holiday rentals Spain have a tremendous selection of rental properties throughout the mainland and the islands.

This Is Spain S.L. who are the owners of www.thisisspain.info are fanatical about encouraging people to learn Spanish if they intend to stay in Spain for more than a holiday. I have reviewed many courses from many centres and have seen the good, the bad and the downright ugly. That said, I believe that this is one Spanish learning opportunity that I can wholly endorse. Please check to see whether it is what you are looking for.

We are also delighted to have teamed up with Rocket Languages to offer you a FREE 6 part Spanish mini-course which takes you through the basics. Obviously you are not going to be fluent after 6 short lessons and will at least be able to introduce yourself ask for help and order “the perfect coffee”. Once you have mastered these basic steps we can highly recommend their excellent and very affordable online course Rocket Spanish – The Ultimate Guide To Learning Spanish. You will find many references throughout the entire site to the need to learn Spanish and this inexpensive but complete site is certainly going to be able to get you to a good level quickly. You download the course over the internet and can work at your own pace, listening and practising until YOU are happy that you are confident with each lesson. You can go back as many times as you like and if there is any particular lesson that causes you problems you just practise until YOU feel ready to move on. To learn more just click here and you will see the entire course and the theory behind the course is explained (in English!). Even if you are only coming to Spain for a few days’ holidays it would be nice (and polite!) to be able to say “hola” or “gracias”. So, why not at least help yourself to the free 6 part mini-course? Rocket Spanish – The Ultimate Guide To Learning Spanish. I have also recently set up a site dedicated to all those who want to learn Spanish where you will find many resources. Please feel free to click here

I would be disingenuous if I wrote that every house purchase by a foreigner goes totally smoothly BUT almost all problems can be predicted and prevented. Too many people believe that the purchase process will be the same as that in the UK, Scandinavia or wherever. This is NOT correct. Sadly, many estate agents have taken advantage of this naivety and made a totally logical and valid process less transparent than necessary for their own gain. I do not care less what any “man and a mobile” says; you need independent advice. Nobody would dream of buying a home in Mansfield without using a solicitor where they would normally understand the system and the language. Amazingly when they buy their home in Málaga, too many decide they can do it alone or use the omnipresent, “bloke in the bar”.

I am also absolutely delighted to confirm that ThisIsSpain has been able to secure the services of Parodi Lawyers who will give an initial consultation at no cost to any visitor to this site who needs advice on any aspect of Spanish Law – be it Legal, Accounting or Taxation. To make contact with PARODILAWYERS
simply email PARODILAWYERS direct and mention ThisIsSpain.

Finally, I am also pleased to advise that This is Spain in association with Hot Costa is delighted to be launching Spain’s first National Discount Programme – – in the English language!

Yes, Costa Store will offer REAL savings together with special offers and other promotions on a wide range of products and services throughout Spain and the islands. Please register free of charge as a customer. Alternatively, if you have products or services that you would like to offer the huge expat market you can do that too. Finally, there is the opportunity for every single person to become an affiliate (at zero cost) and earn commissions simply by introducing CostaStore to their friends and family.

This site can only be of benefit if it is current and is constantly being upgraded. The speed with which Spain is changing means that we are always under pressure to update it. If you see mistakes or omissions or you have information that you would like added, please do not hesitate to contact us. We wish you every success with your new life. If there is anything we can do to help, please do not hesitate to ask.

¡Buena suerte!

Gandia-lawyers-logo

I am a fully qualified, English speaking, Spanish lawyer who specialises in Spanish property law, Wills and inheritance tax.  I also provide advice on Spanish contract law – whilst liasing closely with British lawyers in the UK and Ireland when they have legal issues in Spain.

Spanish property law, of course, is very different from that of other countries and has a number of complexities that need careful attention.  Indeed, it is critical to use an experienced, independent Spanish lawyer for any conveyancing of a property in Spain.

However, it is also essential to undertake legal work only in your own language.  So, fluency in English is an essential pre-requisite for any lawyer in Spain dealing with native English speakers.

I am fluent in English, have dealt with hundreds of English speaking clients and I have a close relationship with British lawyers both in the UK and Ireland.  This allows me to provide advice that is relevant and pertinent to any English speaker who wishes to buy or sell Spanish property – or who has legal problems in Spain.

I am based in Gandia (Valencia Province) Spain which is some 70 kms south of Valencia and, for conveyancing purposes, my practice covers the towns of Gandia, Oliva and Tavernes and the surrounding villages.  This area I know intimately which means that I have an intimate knowledge of the local town halls, their individual regulations and the reality of local property issues.

I also specialise in Spanish property valuations.  These are often required for inheritance tax purposes, divorce proceedings and, of course, for litigation or funding reasons.

If you need a Spanish lawyer then do contact me. I am always available to answer your questions and queries about Spanish law and the way that the law in Spain operates. So, if you have any Spanish property problems or simply want to convey a property in Spain then I can help you – whilst bring to bear on your matter many years of practical experience.

On the other hand, if you are professional law firm based in the English speaking world then do feel free to contact me – if you need legal representation in Spain or have queries regarding Spanish property law, inheritance law or Wills.

Hot Summer Holidays

The European Health Insurance Card makes it easier for people from the European Union’s 27 Member States plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland to access healthcare services during temporary visits abroad.

So, if you are going on holiday, a business trip or a short break or are heading off to study abroad, remember to make sure that you have obtained a card. It will help save you time, hassle and money if you fall ill or suffer an injury while abroad.

What are the practical benefits of the card?

The card ensures that you will get the same access to public sector health care (e.g. a doctor, a pharmacy, a hospital or a health care centre) as nationals of the country you are visiting. If you have to receive medical attention in a country that charges for health care, you will be reimbursed either immediately, or after you go home to your own country. The idea is that you are given the care you need to allow you to continue with your stay.

However, it is important to note that the card does not cover your health care costs while abroad if you are travelling in order to obtain treatment for an illness or injury that you had before travelling. Nor does the card cover you for private sector health care providers.

Property Hunters in Spain

We received a booking request back in 2010 for a 5 week stay in May and June this year from an Australian couple wishing to relocate to Spain.  Not a common background for a property hunter in Spain, you might think, although we have had other Australians staying with us in the past on a similar quest.  At present, the Australian dollar is strong, as is their property market, so Australians are well placed to be able to sell their own homes more readily than many Europeans, and then be in a strong position to purchase over here with a currency that has not been adversely affected by exchange rate variations in the way that the British pound has been.

They found that most of their internet research had been accurate regarding whether a particular town would suit their needs and although they did not complete on the purchase of a property during their time with us, they did find a couple of homes that might be what they were seeking.  As Jane so rightly said, it did not matter if they did not buy a house on this trip to the Costa Blanca – at least they knew places to exclude and places to include, so could watch the availability of properties in the relevant places.  It seems it was never on their plan to buy a property on this trip unless a not-to-be-missed opportunity presented itself, so when the time came for them to return they were not in the least downhearted that they had not made more concrete progress.  They fully intend to monitor the property market in their preferred locations and then return to us – probably towards the end of the year – when they feel they will be able to make more progress.  Another option is to move here regardless of any property purchase, with the intention of renting for a fixed period of months initially, whilst seeking a home to buy as a permanent residence.  Either way, we hope they found their visit to the Costa Blanca to have been of benefit, and hope to see them back with us before the year is out.

Hot Business Topics. Business Procedures and Regulatory Compliance Management
Using a latest generation BPM Suite the Business Regulations of a company, both internal and those of obligatory compliance, work out of necessity

Woburn (Boston), MA. – 7th June, 2011 – AuraPortal (www.auraportal.com), a global provider of Business Process Management (BPM) has presented a new ‘Hot Business Topic’ in international forums, dedicated to the optimization and automation of Business Regulations using a latest generation BPM Suite.

AuraPortal Quality

Whether those regulations relate to Quality, Occupational Safety, Hygiene, Environment, Personal Data Security, Information Security, Basel III, Solvency II, Patriot Act, AML, SOX, etc., using AuraPortal BPM as a platform can help to manage and maintain regulatory compliance in the workplace.

AuraPortal covers the two critical sides of Regulations management:

System Administration for Regulatory Compliance Management

Management procedures and regulatory compliance monitoring will be managed through specific processes, including: documentary cycle to create, review, approve and notify documents, recording of incidents with the approval and monitoring of corrective actions, plans, execution and recording of internal audits, meetings management, training courses and seminars, etc.

AuraPortal Quality

Enterprises Business Processes

AuraPortal promotes regulatory compliance, because when designing the many work entity processes, the regulations are taken into account, including the tasks for compliance. These will have their correspondingBusiness Rules, both textual (instructions on the tasks to be carried out by people) and automatic (which run the system without human intervention).

Thus, when appropriate, actions will be launched automatically to ensure their strict compliance, thereby reducing riskwork (cost) and response times.

In this way, technical instructions and regulation specifications will not depend on personal memory that is needed to apply them, nor will they only appear on paper for their consultation, but will take part in a highly automated set of AuraPortal processes.

The natural result of using this system is the meticulous regulation compliance. The system itself leads to compliance, as it marks the steps to follow.

Awareness of the company direction in compliance with regulations will be reflected in the design itself of administrative processes. The involvement of all users concerned will be maximized, as they will have to follow the instructions in their respective workflow phases.

With AuraPortal’s Extranetexternal users can also participate in the business processes, receiving and sending tasks. Thus, both the application of regulations as well as the monitoring will also be transmitted to subcontractors, suppliers (products, equipment or packaging), transport, etc., ensuring full compliance with quality, as well as with suppliers, partners, agents, etc.
